2026 GLOBAL ENERGY TRANSITION SURVEY

Feb. 20 2026

SECURING THE ENERGY TRANSITION

The global energy transition is entering a complex phase. While electrification is accelerating, political consensus around climate action is weakening, geopolitical tensions are rising and energy security has moved firmly to the forefront.

Rapid growth in electricity demand is reshaping energy systems worldwide. AI and data infrastructure are emerging as structural drivers of consumption, adding urgency to existing questions around capacity, reliability and system resilience. At the same time, conventional fuels and assets are likely to remain part of the global energy mix for longer than previously assumed, reinforcing the need for pragmatic, orderly pathways to decarbonisation.

In this context, accelerating the energy transition is increasingly about security. Securing electricity supply in the face of rising demand; securing energy systems against geopolitical, supply-chain and infrastructure risks; and securing emissions reductions in a world where conventional energy assets will continue to operate.

Now in its fourth year, the 2026 survey examines a series of fundamental questions addressing the age of electricity and rising demand, energy security through diversification, power grids as the backbone of security, decarbonising conventional energy as well as the complex context of a divided world, exploring how energy security concerns are shaping the energy transition across different regions, and notably the Global South.
