Combating the Risks of Solar Panel Procurement in Australia

18/04/18

Photovoltaic solar panels destined for large-scale Australian solar farms are mass produced overseas in batches and graded according to an initial performance test. The quality of the panel within a batch can vary widely both structurally and in electrical performance.

The quality of PV panels and other components such as clamps, brackets and supports may be managed by the factory with a certified management systems and by measuring and controlling the manufacturing process to produce a consistent product.

Relatively fragile panels are secured onto pallets for shipment. Large-scale solar farms require literally thousands of panels on hundreds of pallets shipped to an Australian port, then sent to a warehouse before being trucked to the project site. Handling the panels and pallets is a source of risk.

Australia has one of the world’s best solar resources generally close to demand and infrastructure to support a solar farm connection to the grid. However, unless the risks associated with the manufacture, handling and shipping of PV commodity is managed, a solar farm can produce a sub-optimal power performance and return on investment.

From a single point of contact here in Australia, Bureau Veritas' global network of Procurement Experts and Services assist stakeholders in the supply of products destined for Australian projects. Bureau Veritas can represent Australian customers of solar components manufactured in any overseas location, from the factory through ports, warehouses to the project site in Australia. The risk is managed by:

- Supplier Certification Audits
- Inspection and Expediting
- FAT
- Packing inspection
- Loading and Discharge Inspections
- Site inspections
- Witnessing performance tests
- HSE, Engineering and Materials consulting

Managing manufacturing, logistical and other procurement related issues is critical in any solar farm project to maximise performance and return on investment. With Bureau Veritas procurement services we can help ensure the best from your components so you move forward with confidence.
