Benefits of Gamma and CAT Scanning as Non-Intrusive Inspection Techniques

05/07/18

Bureau Veritas have successfully introduced two innovative Non Intrusive Inspection (NII) techniques for process piping, vessels and towers where build-up of fluids and solids may be present, and internal access is limited. Gamma and CAT Scanning NII techniques may be performed in-service which translates into time and cost saving benefits.

Gamma Scanning

Gamma ScanningGamma Scanning is a one dimensional density profile usually along the height or length of the vessel. This service utilises Gamma Transmission theory, a non-invasive method that uses a sealed radioactive source and an electronic detector.

A radioactive source and electronic detector are positioned opposite to each other on the tower. The equipment is moved down the tower in specific distance increments. A relative density reading is then taken at each position where a plot of the density vs. distance is created. Ultimately, the density plot is used to analyse the fluid and vapour characteristics inside the vessel.

CAT Scanning

CAT ScanningComputer Aided Tomography (CAT) Scanning is a two dimensional density profiling tool. It is a non-invasive service using computed tomography technique.

A single radioactive source and multiple electronic detectors are positioned in an arc around the vessel. A relative density reading is then taken from the source to each detector. All of the equipment is rotated a predefined angle and the measurements are taken again. The data is filtered and run through a software to reconstruct a density image. More data points results in better resolution but longer scanning time is required.

Benefits of Gamma and CAT Scanning

BV’s Gamma Scanning and CAT Scanning are innovative, high technology methods that will benefit customers in several ways.

Determine process problems by:
- Scans are performed online
- Data is acquired at operating conditions
- Multiple scans can compare operating parameter effects
- Engineers can focus on solutions rather than detection.

Reducing costs
- Less down time means more production and translates into more profit
- Plan efficient shutdowns to minimise downtime
- Do not enter or inspect vessels unnecessarily
- Order tower internal replacements prior to shutdowns
- Less personnel and equipment required for shutdown and inspections
