PLANT GUARDING RISK ASSESSMENTS

Assess the adequacy of plant safety systems to ensure risks to workers are controlled as low as reasonably practicable.

Business Challenge

Fixed and mobile plant in the workplace is integral to the operation of most industries, but death or serious injury from exposure to uncontrolled plant hazards represents one of the greatest causes of harm in the workplace. Hazards may include entrapment, entanglement, falls, burns, electrocution and many others.

Work health and safety laws in all Australian jurisdictions mandate that plant hazards be identified and risks controlled to prevent harm to workers and others.

Solution

A Bureau Veritas Plant Risk Assessment may include, but is not limited to, any or all of the following elements:

  • Fixed plant:
    • Entrapment, entanglement, and related machine hazards
    • Confined space and fall hazards
    • Machinery guarding, including  interlocks
    • Electrocution, hot surfaces, noise and chemicals safety hazards
    • Maintenance and servicing, including isolation procedures
    • Signage, safe operating procedures, operator training and competency, etc.
  • Mobile plant (e.g. forklifts, cranes, earthmoving equipment, elevated work platforms etc.)
    • Entrapment, entanglement, and related machine hazards
    • Traffic management and worker exclusion zones
    • Burns, noise and chemicals safety hazards
    • Rollover and falling object protection systems (ROPS and FOPS)
    • Maintenance and servicing, including isolation procedures
    • Signage, safe operating procedures, operator training and competency, etc.

Our Approach

A Bureau Veritas Plant Risk Assessment will identify plant hazards at your workplace, assess the level of risk based on the consequence and likelihood of harm resulting, and the adequacy of existing controls. The Plant Risk Assessment will identify and prioritise high-risk areas for improvement. Assessments are undertaken for individual items of plant and for operations as a whole, for example to assess the adequacy of traffic management, electrical safety or maintenance procedures.

A detailed risk assessment report including recommended actions is documented for each item. Thereafter, Bureau Veritas can work with you to develop and implement actions to improve control over identified risk areas.
